LOS ANGELES - For the second consecutive day the outcome of the match came down to doubles action as the No. 10 ranked UCLA women's tennis team defeated 12th- ranked Pepperdine, 5-4, at the Los Angeles Tennis Center today. Today's victory marks the second for the Bruins over the Waves this season and improves UCLA's record to 14-3 on the season, while Pepperdine dropped to 11-4 overall.

Singles action began with UCLA claiming the first two matches in straight sets, but heated up as Pepperdine took the next one to finish in a tiebreaker and the remaining three courts went a full three sets. First to finish was court No. 1 where UCLA junior Annica Cooper defeated Pepperdine senior Angela Lawrence 6-4, 6-1. Next off, it was junior Amanda Basica posting a 6-3, 6-4 Bruin win over the Waves' sophomore Ipek Senoglu. Pepperdine scored its first point when sophomore Cintia Tortorella rallied to claim the second-set tiebreaker 8-6 and registered a 6-2, 7-6 win over UCLA rookie Petya Marinova on court No. 6.

In the three-set matches, UCLA claimed victory on court No. 4 as junior Katia Roubanova defeated Pepperdine senior Nicola Kaiwai 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 to go ahead 3- 1. Pepperdine closed the gap when freshman Paola Palencia defeated UCLA senior Brandi Freudenberg 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 on court No. 3. The Waves tied the match at three all with a hard fought victory on court No. 5 where sophomore Anh Nguyen held off UCLA junior Elizabeth Schmidt 5-7, 6-1, 6-4.

In a battle between closely ranked doubles teams, UCLA's No. 8 tandem of Basica and Cooper put the Bruins ahead with an 8-2 win over Pepperdine's No. 12 duo of Lawrence and Senoglu on court No. 1. For the second straight day it was the Bruins' No. 3 doubles team of Freudenberg and Marinova which clinched the team victory as the duo defeated Pepperdine's team of Nguyen and Nadine Rastetter 8- 3. Although the team victory was already decided the No. 2 doubles match continued and Pepperdine notched its final point with a victory by Kaiwai and Palencia over UCLA's team of Roubanova and Schmidt.

Notably, with UCLA's normal No. 1 player, Cristina Popescu, still sidelined by an injury, none of today's singles match-ups were the same as the meeting between these two teams on Feb. 2 in Malibu which UCLA claimed 5-1 without contesting doubles.

The Bruins will now take a break from competition for exams and return to action in the Bay Area facing No. 5 Stanford on Friday, April 2 and No. 4 Cal on Saturday, April 3.
