Guichard, Bruins Prevail in Another NCAA Thriller
May 02, 2026 | Women's Tennis
TEMPE, Ariz. โ Ahmani Guichard and the UCLA women's tennis team survived their second 4-3 thriller in as many days Saturday, beating host and 16th-seeded Arizona State in a NCAA Championship second-round contest at Whiteman Tennis Center. Guichard was the last player standing, prevailing in three sets.
The Bruins overcame San Diego State, with Olivia Center providing the final point, in Friday's first round. UCLA (18-7) now moves on to the super-regional round and a date with No. 1 overall seed Georgia or Charlotte. That matchup will be decided Sunday. Arizona State ended its season with a 20-6 record.
Guichard also sent UCLA to the super regionals in 2025, when she delivered the deciding strike in a 4-3 victory at Vanderbilt. Her latest clutch performance came in a 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 triumph over Zlata Bartanusz on Court 6, where the Bruins would celebrate in the desert heat.
UCLA's second-court pair of No. 64 Mayu Crossley/Anne-Christine made a statement to kick off doubles play, beating Aiya Nupbay/Emilija Tverijonaite 6-0. No. 24 Center/Kate Fakih then hung on to beat Vivian Ovrootsky/Lily Taylor 6-4 on Court 1, clinching the first point.
Ovrootsky quickly bounced back in singles play, beating Fakih 6-2, 6-0 on Court 3 to tie the score. No. 44 Tverijonaite then handed No. 15 Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer a 6-2, 6-1 defeat on Court 1, giving the Sun Devils a 2-1 lead.
No. 34 Crossley provided an answer, rolling to a 6-2, 6-1 result over Sara Svetac on Court 2. Center then pulled through in another clutch moment on Court 5, taking down Nupbay by a 6-4, 6-3 margin. The match proved destined to go the distance, though, as Taylor bested Bianca Fernandez 7-6(7), 6-3 on Court 4 to level things once more.
Guichard jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the third set before Bartanusz charged back. Leading 5-4 with the ball in her court, Guichard won a deuce point before collapsing to the ground and absorbing congratulations from her teammates.
