LOS ANGELES - The No. 8 UCLA women's tennis team completed its first weekend of Pac-10 Conference action with a 7-2 win over No. 12 Arizona State University at the Los Angeles Tennis Center today. With the victory UCLA improves to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in Pac-10 action, while Arizona State fell to 1-2 overall and 0- 2 in the Pac-10.

Despite having three singles matches go the distance, UCLA claimed five of the six singles points for the second day in a row and clinched the team victory before doubles action began for the fourth time in as many outings. Setting the tone early with an important victory in the top-position was No. 11 ranked UCLA sophomore Cristina Popescu who quickly defeated ASU freshman Allison Bradshaw 6- 3, 6-0.

Next off was court No. 6 where UCLA rookie Petya Marinova defeated ASU sophomore Celena McCoury 6-2, 6-4. Also posting a straight-set win for the Bruins was No. 30 ranked junior Amanda Basica who handled ASU senior Katy Propstra 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 3 slot.

The Bruins' team captain and only senior, Brandi Freudenberg, put UCLA up 4- 0 with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 upset of ASU junior Kerry Giardino, who is tied for No. 61 in the rankings, on court No. 4. ASU earned its only singles point on court No. 5 where sophomore Faye Devera rallied for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over UCLA junior Katia Roubanova. Clinching the team victory despite being extended to three sets in the final singles match to finish was UCLA junior Annica Cooper who defeated ASU sophomore Karin Palme 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 on court No. 2. In a non- counting exhibition match on court No. 7, ASU freshman Ana Lucia Pereyra defeated UCLA's Jennifer Donahue 7-5, 6-2.

With the team victory already secured, the pressure was off in doubles play, but great matches resulted. The No. 1 court matched two top-20 teams against each other, but was the first to finish as UCLA's duo of Basica and Cooper, tied for No. 21 in the rankings, registered an 8-4 win over No. 17 ranked Bradshaw and Propstra. On court No. 2, UCLA's team of Marinova and Popescu notched an 8-6 win over Giardino and Palme. The final match of the afternoon went the distance with ASU prevailing on court No. 3 where Devera and McCoury claimed the tiebreaker 8-6 for the 9-8 win over Freudenberg and Raiss. There has been a change of location for Tuesday's (Feb. 2) match scheduled to take place against local-rival Pepperdine. That match will now be played at Pepperdine at 2:00 p.m. and the Mar. 19 match with the Waves will be played at UCLA at 1:30 p.m.
