LOS ANGELES - The No. 8 ranked UCLA women's tennis team opened an important four-match homestand posting its second sweep of the season, this time 9-0 over No. 31 UNLV at UCLA's Sunset Recreation Center Courts today. The win is the Bruins third straight and improves UCLA's overall record to 8-2 while UNLV slipped to 3-5 on the season.

The tone for the match was set right away as UCLA's No. 13 ranked Cristina Popescu used less than 50 minutes to defeat UNLV's No. 97 ranked Susie Kocsis, 6-0, 6-1 in the top-slot. Next to finish was UCLA captain Brandi Freudenberg who handled UNLV's Britta Gabl 6-1, 6-1 on court No. 4. A short time later, UCLA's No. 31 ranked Annica Cooper finished off Veronica Goude 6-1, 6-4 on court No. 2. Following that closely, UCLA's Petya Marinova won a battle of rookies 6-4, 6-0 over Urska Radanovic in the No. 5 position. Clinching the team victory for UCLA was No. 38 ranked Amanda Basica who won a 6-4, 6-4 battle with UNLV's Marianne Bakken. The final match went three sets as UCLA's Rochelle Raiss was forced to play from behind after dropping the first set, 6-1, in the No. 6 slot. Raiss rallied to win the match 7-5, 6-1.

Doubles action, marked the first appearance of the season for UCLA's Elizabeth Schmidt who has been out of the lineup with an ailing back. Schmidt and partner Katia Roubanova wasted little effort as they registered an 8-0 win over Gabl and Radanovic in the No. 3 position. On court No. 2, the tandem of Marinova and Popescu won 8-6 over Bakken and Goude. Completing the sweep was the No. 1 doubles team of Basica and Cooper which downed Kocsis and Valkenhoff 8-4. Next up, the Bruins return to Pac-10 Conference seeking to an avenge an earlier loss to cross-town rival USC when they host the Women of Troy on Wednesday, March 3. Match time is 1:30 p.m. at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on the UCLA campus. Admission to all of UCLA's home tennis matches is FREE.
