Bruins Suffer First Sweep of Season to Pac-10 Foe Cal, 6-0

LOS ANGELES - In the first match of the final home weekend for the No. 4 ranked UCLA women's tennis team, the No. 7 ranked University of California became the first team this season to sweep the injury depleted Bruins as Cal won 6-0 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Today's loss to Cal marks the second of the season to the Golden Bears who also defeated UCLA 5-1 in Berkeley on April 3. UCLA drops to 17-6 overall and 5-2 in Pac-10 Conference action, while Cal moves to 16-3 overall and 6-1 in league play.

Notably, only one of today's match-ups was the same as the meeting between these two teams earlier this month in Berkeley. Cal played without today's No. 2 player Amy Jensen in the first meeting, while UCLA was without then-No. 3 Katia Roubanova in today's action. In addition, UCLA's highest ranked singles player, No. 13 Cristina Popescu, has been sidelined with injuries since March 3. Cal claimed the first set on four courts and came back to post wins on all six courts. First to finish was court No. 5 where senior Francesca La'O defeated UCLA freshman Petya Marinova 6-1, 6-2. Next off was court No. 4 where junior Claire Curran handled UCLA junior Elizabeth Schmidt 6-2, 6-2 giving the Golden Bears a quick 2-0 lead.

UCLA junior Amanda Basica battled to a tiebreaker in the second set before falling to junior Amy Jensen 6-3, 7-6(6) on court No. 2. In the No. 6 position, UCLA freshman Rochelle Raiss lost a first-set tiebreaker 7-6(3), then dropped the second set 6-3 to Cal junior Karoline Borgersen, who is currently tied for No. 59 in the national rankings.

The final two matches went the distance as UCLA won the first set on both courts, but Cal rallied back. In the only repeat match-up the outcome was the same despite going three sets, as No. 28 ranked Cal senior Amanda Augustus again upset No. 18 ranked UCLA junior Annica Cooper 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the top-slot. Completing the sweep for the Bears was No. 17 ranked sophomore Anita Kurimay who needed all three sets to defeat UCLA senior Brandi Freudenberg 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-3 on court No. 3.

With the match in hand doubles contests were not competed. The Bruins conclude their final homestand tomorrow, Saturday, April 17, hosting No. 5 ranked Stanford in the final Pac-10 Conference match at Noon at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Cal travels across town to face USC also at Noon.
