LOS ANGELES - In the NCAA Softball Regional first round action at UCLA's Easton Softball Stadium, top-seeded UCLA defeated Alabama 7-0 behind two home runs and five RBIs by third baseman Julie Adams and a one-hitter by pitcher Courtney Dale.
The Bruins struck early in the game, scoring one run in the first inning when an Adams groundout scored Amanda Freed with the bases loaded.
After RBI singles from Lyndsey Klein and Stacey Nuveman in the third inning, Adams accounted for two more runs with a two-run home run to left field to give the Bruins a 5-0 lead.
Adams struck again in the fifth inning when she hit her second two-run homer of the game. It was the second multiple-home run game of the season for the junior. <>Dale, meanwhile, mowed down the Alabama batters, striking out 10. She had a perfect game going into the top of the sixth but allowed Suzanne Olcott on base by throwing an errant ball to first on a grounder. Dale's no-hit bid was also erased when she gave up a hit in the top of the sixth to Kelley Askew.
UCLA (55-6) advances to meet the loser of the Minnesota-Creighton game at 12:30pm Friday, while Alabama (39-25) will face Missouri at 10:00am in the double-elimination tournament.
