PORTLAND, Ore. - Martin Bruno's goal in the 22nd minute Sunday lifted #3 UCLA to a 1-0 exhibition win over Portland.
In a logjam just inside the box, Bruno took a through pass from Pete Vagenas, the picked his way through a crowd before lifting a bullet to the right of Portland keeper Curtis Spiteri at 21:47 in the first half.
Portland had a tying goal from freshman Conor Casey waved off in the 67th minute on a foul. Sheldin Maistry took a corner from the near side and after UCLA keeper Nick Rimando knocked it down, Casey pounced on the free ball and punched in from short range. While the Pilots celebrated, however, the lead referee had whistled Casey for contact with Rimando, wiping off the goal.
UCLA controlled play for much of the game, but managed just eight shots on goal. Spiteri was forced to make only one save in the contest. The Pilots also managed just eight shots, three in the second half. Portland had a 5-4 edge in corners, and held UCLA to only two shots on goal in the second half.
