San Francisco, Calif. - Midfielders Sasha Victorine and Shaun Tsakiris combined on all three UCLA goals as the fifth-ranked UCLA men's soccer defeated the University of San Francisco 3-1 at Negoesco Stadium.
Victorine, a finalist for the 1999 Hermann Trophy, put the Bruins ahead just 1:26 into the game, heading in a Tsakiris corner kick at the near right post. The Dons tied the game at 21:05 when Gerard Hylkema tapped in a short shot from the left post. But the Bruins regained the lead for good when Tsakiris scored the game-winner 20 minutes later off a give-and-go from Victorine. Victorine put the game away in the 52nd minute, hitting in an open header from five yards out for his team-high fifth goal of the season. Tsakiris, who notched his sixth assist of the year, and Martin Bruno hooked up for the assists.
UCLA outshot USF 15-9. Bruin goalkeeper Nick Rimando took the victory with two saves. USF's Scott Spaulding made four.
UCLA's record improves to 4-1-0, while USF, whose four-game winning streak was snapped, drops to 4-3-0. The Bruins will next face San Jose State on Sunday, Sept. 19 at Spartan Stadium at 5:00 pm.
