LOS ANGELES - The sixth-ranked UCLA women's tennis team opened its 2000 dual-match campaign Wednesday, winning five of six singles matches and both doubles contests, en route to an 7-1 defeat of No. 23 Fresno State at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.

UCLA gained an early 1-0 advantage when Amanda Basica quickly defeated Kandiss Creighton 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Fresno State equaled the match after Chantel Wiggins returned the favor with a 6-1, 6-0 decision over UCLA's Jennifer Donahue at the No. 6 position. Moment's later, Bruin freshman Abigail Spears put UCLA ahead for good, beating Ewa Grusiecka 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.

However, UCLA's next three singles victories would all take a third set. After dropping the first set 6-2 to Kim Niggemeyer at No. 1 singles, Bruin freshman Sara Walker battled back to take the next two sets 6-1, 6-4. On court No. 5, UCLA's Petya Marinova grinded out a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 victory over FSU's Kelly Ramirez.

Last to finish was court No. 3 where UCLA's Elizabeth Schmidt, who lost the first set and was down 4-1 in the second, remarkably came back to knock off Liesl Fichtbauer 3-6, 7-5, 6-1.

Since the Bruins had already clinched the victory after singles play, only two doubles matches were played. At No. 1 doubles, UCLA's Basica/Walker defeated FSU's Creighton/Fichtbauer 8-6 and at No. 2 doubles the Bruin tandem of Schmidt/Spears knocked off Renee Kops-Jones/Niggemeyer 8-1.

With the victory, UCLA improves to 1-0 on the season, while Fresno State falls to 0-1. The Bruins return to action this Friday when they host Cal State Northridge at 1:30 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
