WESTWOOD, Calif. - The UCLA men's tennis team, slated at No. 1 in the national rankings, posted its second consecutive sweep today, defeating No. 55 Arizona State 7-0 in a Pac-10 Conference matchup Saturday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. With the victory, UCLA improves to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in Pac-10 action. Arizona State falls to 0-2 both overall and in conference play.

UCLA started the match by claiming the doubles point and posting wins on all three courts. The UCLA duo of Jean-Noel Grinda and Jean-Julien Rojer was first to finish, handing the Sun Devils' duo of Matt Klinger and Andrew Golub an 8-3 loss. Court No. 2 was next to finish, as UCLA's team of Chris Sands and Lassi Ketola prevailed over Mitchell Bowen and Pim Van Mele 8-4. In the top position, the UCLA tandem of Jong-Min Lee and Brandon Kramer battled back from a 6-7 deficit to upset the team of Ed Carter and Alex Osterrieth, who are ranked No. 4 in the nation, 9-7.

Despite the lopsided victory, only two courts finished singles play without going into either a tie-breaker or a third set. Rojer recorded UCLA's first point in singles play with a quick 6-3, 6-0 victory over the Sun Devils' Golub in the No. 5 position. Sands, who is ranked No. 53 in the nation, put the Bruins ahead 3-0 when he defeated Bowen 6-2, 6-2 on court No. 4.

The match-clincher came on court No. 3, where freshman Lassi Ketola claimed the first set 6-3 over Klinger, fell 6-1 in the second and then rebounded from the loss to grab a 6-4 third set victory.

Courts No.1, 2 and 6 all went into tie-breakers. Senior co-captain Brandon Kramer extended UCLA's lead to 5-0 when he defeated Carter 6-3, 7-6(7) in the No. 2 position. Minutes after Kramer finished, Lee defeated Osterrieth, who is tied for No. 88 in the nation, 7-6(0), 6-2 on court No. 1. Last to finish was court No. 6, where freshman Erfan Djahangiri refused to let ASU claim a single point and came from behind to beat ASU's Mele 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-5.

The Bruins conclude their homestand next week when they face off against No. 21 Pepperdine on Tuesday, Feb. 1 at 1:30 pm. The match will be held at the Los Angeles Tennis Center and admission is free.
