Los Angeles, Calif. - The top-ranked UCLA men's soccer team came from behind to win its eighth consecutive game, defeating Saint Mary's 3-2 at Frank W. Marshall Field on the UCLA campus. Trailing at the half by a score of 2-1, the Bruins scored twice in the second half to claim the victory.
Hermann Trophy candidate McKinley Tennyson Jr. scored the game's first goal at the 6:33 mark, accepting a through ball from Jimmy Frazelle and beating Saint Mary's goalkeeper Kellan Wilson. Saint Mary's quickly struck back when the Bruins were called for a foul just outside the box. On the ensuing indirect free kick, Nick Marcum tapped the ball to Eric Reed, who drilled it through the wall and into the net past a diving DJ Countess for the first goal UCLA has ever given up at Frank W. Marshall Field. Marcum put the Gaels ahead at the 25:06 mark when he took an Oscar Bueno pass across the box and beat Countess.
The play of midfielder Shaun Tsakiris sparked the Bruins in the second half. Eight minutes into the second period, Tsakiris' corner kick found Scot Thompson on the left side, and Thompson headed the ball into the back of the net for the equalizer. Five minutes later, Tsakiris scored his second consecutive game-winner on a shot from 12 yards out.
The Gaels' attempts to tie after Tsakiris' go-ahead goal took a hit in the 73rd minute when defender Dan Miller was issued two consecutive yellow cards and an ejection.
UCLA improves its record to 8-0-0, while Saint Mary's falls to 3-6-0. The Bruins open Pac-10 play on Sunday, Oct. 8 at Stanford.
