Bruins Travel to Florida for NCAA Championships

No. 14 UCLA Women's Tennis Upsets Seventh-Ranked USC

Los Angeles - The 14th-ranked UCLA women's tennis team came back to beat cross town rival, No. 7 USC, Wednesday at Marks Tennis Stadium on the campus of USC. After losing four of the six singles matches, the Bruins came back to sweep doubles and secure the win, 5-4.

UCLA gained an early lead when freshman Sara Walker defeated Kara Warkentin, 6-3, 6-2 at Court 1. USC swept the Bruins at the Nos. 2, 3, and 4 positions. Amanda Basica, Abigail Spears and Elizabeth Schmidt were each defeated in close sets. At No. 5, Annica Cooper easily defeated Anita Loyola, 6-3, 6-2. Catherine Hawley fell to Tiffany Brymer, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 6 singles.

The Bruins relied on doubles play to achieve victory. Schmidt/Spears defeated Veronika Safarova/ Loyola, 8-5, at the No. 2 spot. At No. 3, UCLA's Cooper/ Petya Marinova defeated Jewel Peterson/Jacqui Boyd, 8-6. At No. 1, Basica/Walker defeated USC's Brymer/Warkentin, 8-5, to clinch the win.

With the victory, UCLA improves to 7-2 overall and 3-1 in Pac-10 play. The Trojans are 8-3 overall, 2-2 in the Pac-10. The Bruins' next match is Saturday, March 4, in Austin, Tex., where they will face the Texas Longhorns. Sunday, March 5, they will go head to head with the University of Georgia, also in Austin.
