Malibu, Calif. - Top-ranked and undefeated Stanford won five straight singles matches to defeat No. 9 UCLA 5-0 Friday, in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Women's Tennis Championships held at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Complex at Pepperdine University.
Stanford (29-0) moves on to face the winner of Cal and Wake Forest in the semifinals on Saturday. UCLA finishes its season 17-9 overall.
"We didn't play as well as we had hoped and Stanford played very well," UCLA head coach Stella Sampras said. "We just didn't have what it took to come out on top today. You have to take your hats off to Stanford. They have a lot of confidence and they came out and took control. They played extremely well."
In the featured match of the afternoon, top-ranked Marissa Irvin of Stanford downed No. 2-ranked Sara Walker of UCLA 6-3, 6-3. It was the third meeting between the two players this season, with Irvin winning all three contests.
Stanford took control of the match early, jumping out to early leads at all six singles positions, winning the first set on each court. The Cardinal took a 1-0 lead after third-ranked Laura Granville defeated No. 47 Annica Cooper 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Next to finish was court No. 4, where No. 60 Gabriela Lastra of Stanford dispatched of No. 77 Abigail Spears 6-1, 6-2. That match was immediately followed by Irvin's victory over Walker at No. 1 singles to put the Cardinal ahead 3-0.
Moments later on the back courts, Keiko Tokuda brought Stanford within one point of clinching after she beat Catherine Hawley 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6 singles. The match was eventually decided at the No. 3 position when No. 9 Lauren Kalvaria downed No. 79 Amanda Basica 6-1, 6-3.
Though the Bruins were eliminated from the team competition on Friday, UCLA still has six players competing in the individual championships, which begin on Monday. The 64-player singles draw features Walker and Cooper, while the teams of Walker/Basica and Schmidt/Spears will be competing in the 32-team doubles tournament. Both draws will be announced Saturday.
