Irvine, Calif. - UCLA freshman Adolfo Gregorio scored the game-winning goal two minutes into sudden-death overtime to give UCLA a 2-1 win over UC Irvine at Anteater Stadium, in front of a school-record crowd of 1,545 spectators.
The Bruins got off to an early start in the game when senior midfielder Shaun Tsakiris took a Ryan Lee free kick and blasted a shot past UC Irvine goalkeeper Tyler Reid in the third minute of the game. The Bruins maintained the lead until 52:05 when Irvine's Chris Ruiz took a long cross from Laurence Smalls and headed it past Bruin keeper DJ Countess.
UCLA had several chances to regain the lead. With 27 minutes to play, Matt Taylor, McKinley Tennyson Jr. and Gregorio had successive close range shots that were all stopped by Reid. Two minutes later, UCLA had a Ty Maurin goal taken away but was awarded a penalty kick when a Bruin was taken down inside the box before the Maurin shot. Tennyson took the PK and shot to his left, but Reid guessed correctly and made an outstanding save to block the penalty kick, which helped maintain the tie and send the game into overtime.
Countess earned the win for the Bruins and made three saves, while Reid had eight saves in the loss. UCLA improves to 5-0, and UC Irvine drops to 5-2. UCLA will next play UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, September 24 on Frank W. Marshall Field at Drake Stadium. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
