UCLA Cross Country 'B' Teams Compete at UC Irvine Invite

UCLA's women and men's cross country "B" teams on Saturday (Sept. 8) competed at the UC Irvine Invitational, held at Central Park in Huntington Beach. The Bruin women placed fifth and the UCLA men were 10th.

In the women's team competition (18 teams), UC Irvine won with 61 points, followed by Arizona State 64, Northern Arizona 75, CS Northridge 124 and UCLA "B" 148. The women's individual 5000m overall winner was Karen Nilsson (Unattached) in a time of 17:58.4 and the women's collegiate winner was Northern Arizona's Ida Nilsson, 18.15.5.

The Bruins top women's runner was sophomore Jessica Marr, who placed 22nd in a time of 19:23.3. Other UCLA top runners were ' junior Julia Barbour (25th, 19:26.0), junior Kelly Grimes (33rd, 19:34.3), freshman Carolyn Shea (34th, 19:34.4) and freshman Christine Atkins (45th, 19.49.0).

In the men's team competition (16 teams), Northern Arizona won with 33 points, followed by Arizona State 46, Cal Poly-SLO 58, Southern Utah 171 and CS San Marcos 175. The Bruin men placed 10th with 253 points. The men's individual winner was Arizona State's Juan Reyes, covering the 8000m course in a time of 25:22.6.

UCLA's top runner in the men's race was freshman Seth Neumuller, who placed 29th, in a time of 27:06.7. UCLA's top runners behind Neumuller were junior Phil Young (47th, 27:40.3), freshman Bryan Bauerle (51st, 27:46.8), freshman Reggie Oronoz (71st, 28:30.2) and freshman Lucas Crowley (76th, 28:33.6).

The UCLA varsity women's and men's squads trained through the week at Mammoth Lakes. The Bruins next competition is Sept. 22 at the Sundodger Invitational in Seattle, WA.
