Washington Edges UCLA, 1-0, In Men's Soccer

Los Angeles, CA - The 12th-ranked UCLA men's soccer team lost a Pac-10 Conference match for the first time since Nov. 8, 2002, falling to 24th-ranked Washington, 1-0. The Huskies scored in the 13th minute and held off a tenacious Bruin attack for the shutout.
Husky forward Brett Wiesner scored his second goal of the season at 12:31, shooting from about five yards out after a C.J. Klaas cross in the box.
The Bruins had ample opportunities to score but were thwarted each time. The Bruins' first threat came in the sixth minute when Aaron Lopez headed a Jordan Harvey corner kick off the post. Chad Barrett's rebound shot was blocked by Washington. In the 29th minute, Benny Feilhaber blasted a ball into the box that Mike Enfield redirected wide. In the second half, Chad Barrett had a point blank shot in the box blocked by a Husky defender. In all, UCLA had 16 shots to Washington's five and also held an 11-2 corner kick advantage.
Washington keeper Chris Eylander made five saves in the game. UCLA's Eric Reed had one, a spectacular diving save off a Klaas shot in the 65th minute.
The Bruins' record falls to 5-2-2 (1-1-0 in the Pac-10), while Washington improves to 8-3-1 (1-0-0 in conference play). The loss snapped UCLA's 13-game Pac-10 winning streak. UCLA's last Pac-10 loss came in a 1-0, double overtime decision at California in 2002
UCLA has a bye this coming week, with the alumni game on Saturday, Oct. 9. Festivities begin at 11 am on Drake Stadium.
