Bruins Lose in Five Games to Hawaii

Second-ranked UCLA fell in five games to top-ranked Hawaii in MPSF men's volleyball action Thursday night in Honolulu.

The Warriors won 26-30, 30-28, 25-30, 30-26, 15-9 in two hours and 33 minutes before 4,365 fans at the Stan Sheriff Center. The victory was the Warriors' ninth straight and raised their record to 11-2 overall 8-1 in conference play. The Bruins fell to 12-3, 7-3. The Bruins now trail the first-place Warriors by two games in the conference standings.

Junior Paul Johnson led the Bruins with 16 kills (.591, six block assists and two aces. Senior Marcin Jagoda came off the bench and slammed 13 kills (.308). Senior Chris Pena added 12 kills (.348), three block assists and two aces, and junior Kris Kraushaar spiked 11 kills (.308)and added three block assists. Senior libero Adam Shrader recorded 10 digs and setter Dennis Gonzalez added 54 set assists, three block assists, an ace and a kill for a season-high of 3.5 points.

Hawaii's Pedro Azenha and Delano Thomas combined for 44 kills and three aces to lead the Warriors, who have now won five straight against the Bruins.

The two teams meet again on Saturday in Hawaii at 9 p.m. PST. The match will be carried live on kkea1420am.com.
