LOS ANGELES - The Eighth-ranked UCLA men's tennis team snapped its uncharacteristic three-match losing streak Friday with an impressive 7-0 decision over No. 25 Arizona at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins, who narrowly defeated the Wildcats, 4-3 back on Feb. 21 in Tucson, improve to 10-5 on the year. Arizona drops to 8-5.
Unlike the first time these two teams met, UCLA managed to win the doubles point Friday, taking victories on court Nos. 1 and 3. The doubles point was clinched at the No. 1 position, where UCLA's Alberto Francis / Kris Kwinta, ranked No. 19 in the nation, defeated Roger Matalonga/Colin O'Grady, 8-3. With the victory, Francis and Kwinta improve to 25-6 on the season.
With the exception of two matches, the Bruins cruised in singles action. UCLA took a 2-0 lead in the match when No. 52 Chris Lam posted a convincing 6-1, 6-1 decision over Tom Lloyd at the No. 2 position. Right next to Lam on court No. 3, the 36th-ranked Kwinta registered a 6-3, 6-3 win over Arizona's Whi Kim.
The match was clinched at the No. 4 position, where Francis, ranked No. 95, posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory over O'Grady. The only other straight-set winner for the Bruins on Friday was Chris Surapol , who knocked off Paul Warkentin, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.
UCLA's Tobias Clemens and Philipp Gruendler were both able to recover from first-set losses to win in three. Gruendler, ranked No. 86, lost the first set 6-0 to Daniel Andrus before winning the next two 6-3, 6-2. Clemens, the No. 6-ranked player in the nation, stormed back to defeat Matalonga, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot.
The Bruins return to action tomorrow, hosting No. 22 Arizona State at the Los Angeles Tennis Center beginning at 1:00 p.m.
