The top-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team survived a scare Friday night by battling back from the depths of defeat to beat unranked Pacific 3-2 in Pauley Pavilion.

The Bruins won 21-30, 22-30, 30-28, 30-24, 16-14 in two hours and 15 minutes in front of 523 noisy fans. The victory raised the Bruins' record to 15-3 overall, 9-3 in MPSF play. Pacific fell to 4-14, 2-11. With the win, the Bruins stepped up to third place in league play following Hawaii's 3-1 loss to CS Northridge Friday night.

Freshman Steve Klosterman and senior Chris Pena carried the Bruins to victory by combining for seven kills and two aces in Game 5. Pena led both teams with 19 kills (.533) and added three total blocks and an ace, while Klosterman recorded 14 kills, two aces and one block assist. For the second straight match, sophomore Beau Peters started at setter for the Bruins. He recorded 52 assists. Senior libero Adam Shrader had 16 digs.

Pacific served 12 aces, including seven by junior Nils Dauburs. Dauburs also spiked 12 kills and added a match-high 17 digs. Junior Brian Zodrow led the Tigers with 18 kills.

The Bruins will host Stanford Saturday night at 7 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion in the 27th annual Kilgour Cup.
