Bruins Win 21st Kilgour Cup with 3-2 Victory over Stanford

The top-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team outlasted Stanford 3-2 to win the 27th annual Kilgour Cup Saturday night in Pauley Pavilion.
The Bruins won 30-28, 28-30, 22-30, 30-24, 17-15 in two hours and 19 minutes before 814 raucous fans. The victory raised UCLA's record to 16-3 overall, 10-3 in league play. Stanford fell to 7-12, 4-10.
After a timeout at 14-14 in Game 5, Stanford took the lead on a kill by junior David Vogel. The Bruins tied the game at 15-15 on a bad set by the Cardinal, and took the lead on junior Jonathan Acosta's kill. Junior Paul Johnson then served an ace to give the Bruins their 16th victory of the season and snap a two-match losing streak to the Cardinal.
UCLA overcame a huge Stanford block by recording eight more kills and seven more aces than their opponent. For the second straight night, senior Chris Pena led the Bruins with 19 kills (.400). Senior Marcin Jagoda recorded his first double-double of the season, smacking 17 kills and recording 10 digs. Junior Jonathan Acosta pounded a season-high of 15 kills (.303), including three in Game 5.
Five Stanford players recorded double-figure kills: Craig Buell (.333), William Clayton (15), Chris Ahlfeldt and Vogel (14) and Patrick Bomhack (11). The Cardinal, which out-blocked the Bruins 7-1 in Game 1, won the battle at the net by out-blocking the Bruins 19.5-11.0.
The Bruins travel to UC San Diego on Wed., Mar. 10 before visiting Long Beach State on Fri., Mar. 12.
