UCLA Men's Soccer Team Shuts Out UC Riverside, 1-0

Los Angeles, CA - The second-ranked UCLA men's soccer team shut out UC Riverside by a score of 1-0 at UCLA's Drake Stadium Sunday afternoon. Freshman Kamani Hill scored the game's only goal in the 42nd minute to give the Bruins the Cal State Fullerton SoccerTown Classic team title with a 2-0 tournament record.
Hill, the No. 1-rated recruit in the nation by Soccer America magazine, lived up to his billing, recording his first collegiate goal. Junior defender Jordan Harvey set up the play with a nice pass to Hill in the box. Hill rocketed the shot past Riverside keeper Charles Alamo for what turned out to be the game-winner.
The Bruins had other chances to increase the lead in the second half, totaling 11 shots in the period. Sophomore forward Chad Barrett had a diving header go just wide, and tried a chip shot from 25 yards out in the 83rd minute that Alamo leaped up to grab at the top of the box.
UCLA's defense limited Riverside to just four shots in the game. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Eric Reed made two saves and earned his first career solo shutout. Alamo had eight saves on UCLA's 17 shots.
"I would say we had a good performance," said UCLA head coach Jorge Salcedo. "We moved the ball pretty well, we defended pretty well, we just didn't finish well. But we did a good job at creating numerous chances, and with a few more games under our belts we'll improve on that and score more."
With the two victories in the tournament, UCLA captured the SoccerTown Classic team title. UC Riverside and Oakland tied for second place with 1-1 records. UCLA swept the individual tournament awards. Hill, who scored the only goal in the UCLA-UCR game Sunday and had an assist in the UCLA-Oakland game Friday, was named Outstanding Offensive Player, and teammate Harvey won the Outstanding Defensive Player Award.
The Bruins will next travel to Las Vegas, NV for the UNLV Tournament on Sept. 10 and 12. UCLA will face Creighton on Sept. 10 at 5 pm and UNLV on Sept. 12 at noon.
