UCLA Outlasts Cal Baptist in Five-Game Thriller

The top-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team defeated reigning NAIA champion Cal Baptist University 3-2 Wednesday in a non-conference match in Pauley Pavilion.
The Bruins won 30-20, 28-30, 17-30, 30-27, 15-10 in an hour and 55 minutes before 373 fans. The victory raised UCLA's record to 4-0 overall. The Lancers fell to 2-1.
The Bruins rallied from a two games to one deficit to win their second consecutive five-game match. They defeated Cal State Northridge in five games on Saturday in the finals of the UCSB Classic.
The Lancers tied the match at one game apiece with in Game 2 by pounding 24 kills (.432) to the Bruins' 17 and getting three more blocks than the hosts.
In Game 3, the Lancers blocked the Bruins off the floor, recording eight blocks and stifling UCLA to a .000 hitting percentage (12-12-29).
UCLA roared back in Game 4, hitting .370 on five kills from senior Jonathan Acosta and three kills from sophomore Steve Klosterman. The Bruins also improved their blocking, recording 4.5 blocks for the game, including three assisted blocks from senior Paul Johnson.
In Game 5, the Bruins were flawless, hitting .909 (10-0-11) with one block. That block, a thunderous solo stuff by Klosterman, put the Bruins up 14-9.
Five UCLA players recorded double figure kills, led by Acosta who slammed 20 (.455). Klosterman recorded 15 kills (.321) and four total blocks, followed by Johnson's 14 kills (.440). Allan Vince and Kris Kraushaar each added 10 kills. Redshirt freshman Gaby Acevedo recorded 59 assists and libero Tony Ker added eight digs.
Shaun Dyk led the Lancers with 20 kills.
