LOS ANGELES - Playing its final non-conference opponent before the Pac-10 season gets underway next week, the No. 11-ranked UCLA women's tennis team dispatched of No. 22 Fresno State, 7-0 Saturday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The win moves the Bruins' record to 5-2 overall. The Bulldogs fall to 1-1 with the loss.
The Bruins started the day by taking the doubles point with victories on all three courts. The only real upset of the afternoon came at No. 1 doubles, where UCLA's Alex McGoodwin and Riza Zalameda knocked off 19th-ranked Courtney Jantz/Lucia Sainz, 8-5.
UCLA cruised in singles play, posting straight-set wins of five of six courts. First to finish was court No. 5, where Laura Gordon was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Jacqui Haskett. Zalameda, ranked ninth in the country, was equally as impressive over on court No. 1, recording a 6-2, 6-1 win over 80th-ranked Lucia Tallo. The match was clinched at the No. 6 spot, where UCLA's Elizabeth Lumpkin defeated Fadzai Masiyazi, 6-3, 6-0.
With the dual match already decided in the Bruins' favor, three other UCLA players went on to victories. Freshman Tracy Lin was next to finish, dispatching of Jantz, 6-1, 6-4 at court No. 4. Senior Sarah Gregg, playing her first match at the No. 2 spot, followed that up with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Katharina Winterhalter.
The closest match of the day came at the No. 3 position, as McGoodwin battled back to defeat Sainz, 4-6, 7-6(6), (10-6). Sainz actually had a match point when she was up 6-5 in the second-set tiebreaker.
UCLA returns to action next week, hosting the Arizona schools at the LATC on Friday and Saturday.
