Bruins Defeat Longhorns, 6-1

LOS ANGELES - Taking a break from Pac-10 action this week, the No. 12-ranked UCLA women's tennis team (9-4) dispatched of No. 13 Texas, 6-1 Tuesday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
UCLA, which dropped a tight 4-3 match to the Longhorns (8-3) a year ago in Austin, came out firing from the start, sweeping all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
Once singles play began, UCLA's top three players quickly took care of business. Both 48th-ranked Daniela Bercek and 19th-ranked Riza Zalameda surrendered just two games in each of their matches at Nos. 1 and 2 singles respectively. Bercek defeated Petra Dizdar, 6-0, 6-2, while right next door Zalameda was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Kendra Strohm. Alex McGoodwin clinched the match for UCLA at court No. 3, registering a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Katie Ruckert.
Although the Bruins had already clinched the win with a commanding 4-0 lead in the match, play was much closer on the back three courts. Next to finish was court No. 6, where 83rd-ranked Laura Gordon lost the first set but was able to rebound for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Ristine Olson. Texas claimed its only point on the day at the No. 4 position when Mia Marovic recorded a 7-6(6), 6-3 decision over senior Sarah Gregg.
Bruin freshman Tracy Lin won the final match of the afternoon, posting a 6-4, 6-7(3), (10-8) victory over Courtney Zauft at court No. 5.
UCLA has the next nine days off and will not be in action again until a Mar. 25 showdown with Arizona in Tucson.
