
Bruins Defeat Matadors in Four

Top-ranked UCLA defeated No.9 Cal State Northridge 3-1 Wednesday night in Pauley Pavilion.
The Bruins won 30-23, 33-31, 27-30, 30-27 in two hours before 517 fans. The victory raised UCLA's record to 23-3 overall, 16-3 in MPSF play. Cal State Northridge fell to 15-12 overall, 8-11 in league play.
The turning point in the match came in Game 2 when the Bruins tied the score at 29-29 after trailing by as many as four points earlier in the game. The Matadors had two swings to win it, but a ballhandling error and a service error by senior Nils Nielsen allowed the Bruins to tie the score both times. UCLA won the game on a solo block by senior Allan Vince.
Senior Paul Johnson led the Bruins with 25 points after recording 20 kills (.500), three aces and four total blocks. Sophomore Matt McKinney added 18.5 points on 17 kills and three block assists and Steve Klosterman came off the bench and recorded 16 kills (.517) an ace and two total blocks. Vince scored 13 points on seven kills, seven total blocks and two aces. Freshman Tony Ker made 12 digs and setter Dennis Gonzalez added 63 assists.
Nielsen led the Matadors with 25 kills (.340) and two total blocks.
The Bruins' next home match will be Sat., Apr. 9 vs. UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion.
