Led by Kyle Shackleton, the Bruin men's cross country team finished fifth overall at the Pac-10 Championships in Palo Alto, CA. Shackleton led the Bruins with a 15th-place finish as he ran 23:51 in the 8k race.

"Coming in we were hoping of finishing in the top-four and knew there would be a lot of competition between fourth and seventh place," said Head Cross Country Coach Eric Peterson. "There was a 43 point spread between the third-place team and seventh-place team. The thing that was really exciting about today's race was that the guys running in our No. 4 through No. 8 spots were in critical races with the other teams.

"We got another solid race out of Kyle," added Peterson. "We had him take a chance and go out more aggressive, and although he didn't place as high as we thought he could on his best day, he still had a strong finish. I'm proud of him for leading this team.

Junior Mike Haddan was the No. 2 runner for UCLA, finishing one spot behind Shackleton in 16th-place (23:53.84). Sophomore Laef Barnes placed 25th (24:20.41), while Drew Shackleton finished 30th (24:26.54). Freshman Jake Matthews rounded out the top-five runners with his 51st-place finish in a time of 24:58.29.

"Mike and Laef had dramatic improvements from where they've been running earlier in the season. Jake also had a great race to break 25 minutes over the 8k course for the first time this season to strengthen the back end of our team. We are still looking for one of these guys behind Drew (Shackleton) to close the time gap down that exists between Kyle and the fifth spot. We are going to keep working on that and turn our attention to the 10k for regionals."
