LOS ANGELES - Despite playing its first match in two weeks, the 15th-ranked UCLA women's tennis team looked sharper than ever Thursday afternoon, easily downing UC Irvine, 7-0 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins, who have yet to surrender a point to any opponent this season, improve to 4-0 on the year. UCI drops to 1-3 overall with the loss.
Although it marked the fourth 7-0 victory of the season for UCLA, Thursday's win was especially dominating, as no Bruin player dropped more than three games in singles play. Sophomore Riza Zalameda took it a step further, registering a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Becky Bernhard at the No. 1 position.
Freshman Ashley Joelson clinched the match for UCLA at court No. 5, downing Ali Borowicz, 6-1, 6-2. Laura Gordon, Tracy Lin, Alex McGoodwin and Anna-Viktoria Lind were also straight-set winners.
UCI won its only match of the day in doubles at court No. 2, however the Bruins had already clinched the point by then, taking a pair of 8-4 decisions at court Nos. 1 and 3.
UCLA faces its first top-25 opponent of the season this Saturday, taking on No. 25 Pepperdine (4-0) in Malibu at 11:00 a.m.
