
Bruins Fall to UC Irvine in Three

Seventh-ranked UCLA fell in three to visiting No.2 UC Irvine on Friday in an MPSF match for both teams.
The Anteaters won 31-29, 30-27, 30-25 in 90 minutes before 771 fans in Pauley Pavilion. UC Irvine improved to 15-3 overall, 10-2 in conference play. UCLA fell to 10-9, 5-7.
The victory marked UC Irvine's first series sweep of UCLA in 54 matches. It also allowed the Anteaters to remain a half game behind BYU in the conference race. The Bruins remained in seventh place behind UC Santa Barbara.
The Bruins had their chances in the first two games. In Game 1, the Bruins led 29-27 before the Anteaters reeled off four straight points to win the game. In Game 2, the two teams were tied late before the Anteaters went on a stretch run to win it.
UCLA junior Steve Klosterman pounded 18 kills to lead both teams. He also added an ace and one solo block for 20 points. Senior David Russell added five kills an ace and two block assists.
Matt Webber led the Anteaters with 17 kills and 20.5 points, followed by 13 kills from Jayson Jablonsky and 12 (.611) from Aaron Harrell.
Next week the Bruins will host Loyola University of Chicago (Mar. 7) and Lewis University (Mar. 8). Both matches begin at 7 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion.
