Stanford, Calif. - UCLA women's tennis players Riza Zalameda and Tracy Lin each won first-round singles matches Wednesday in the opening day of individual competition at the NCAA Championships hosted by Stanford University.

An NCAA singles semifinalist a year ago, Zalameda opened up the tournament with a 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-2 victory over Clemson's Carol Salge. She will next face Kentucky's Kim Coventry in the second round on Thursday. Lin downed Blair DiSesa of Rice, 6-1, 6-2, setting up a second-round meeting with sixth-seeded Amanda Fink of USC.

Two Bruins dropped opening-round singles matches Wednesday, as Laura Gordon was defeated by 9-16 seed Zuzana Cerna of Baylor, 6-4, 6-0, while Alex McGoodwin fell to Iowa's Meg Racette, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.

Gordon and Zalameda begin play in the doubles draw Thursday.
