LOS ANGELES - The 15th-ranked UCLA women's tennis team won the doubles point and then took five of six singles matches in straight sets, cruising to a 7-0 victory over No. 24 Fresno State on Friday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins (4-2) improve to 9-1 all-time against the Bulldogs. Fresno State falls to 2-2 overall with the loss.
Friday's featured match came at the No. 1 singles position, where 35th-ranked Riza Zalameda of UCLA and fourth-ranked Melanie Gloria of Fresno State faced off. Despite the difference in the rankings, Zalameda had little trouble with her higher-ranked counterpart, posting a 6-2, 6-2 victory in the first match to finish. Gloria is the highest-ranked player Zalameda has beaten since she defeated second-ranked Julie Coin of Clemson in the quarterfinals of the NCAA singles championships back in 2005.
Senior captain Alex McGoodwin was next off, downing Danon Beatty by the same 6-2, 6-2 score at court No. 5. Freshman Yasmin Schnack, ranked 28th nationally, clinched the win for UCLA at court No. 3 with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Anastasia Petukhova.
Other singles winners for UCLA on Friday were Tracy Lin (court #2), Ashley Joelson (court #4) and Elizabeth Lumpkin (court #6). Lin, ranked 61st nationally, had the closest match of the day, battling back from a set down to defeat 49th-ranked Renata Kucerkova, 3-6, 6-1, (10-5).
The Bruins began the afternoon by claiming the doubles point with wins on all three courts.
UCLA's next match will be against UC Irvine on Tuesday beginning at 1:30 p.m.
