LOS ANGELES - The 22nd ranked UCLA women's tennis team completed its weekend sweep of the Arizona schools on Saturday, taking down No. 21 Arizona State, 6-1 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins, who defeated Arizona, 7-0 on Friday, improve to 11-5 overall. With the loss, the Sun Devils fall to 7-6.
UCLA's Yasmin Schnack and Riza Zalameda, ranked No. 33 nationally, helped the Bruins clinch the doubles point, registering an 8-5 upset over sixth-ranked Roxanne Clarke and Kady Pooler. Prior to that win, Elizabeth Lumpkin and Stephanie Wetmore posted an 8-1 victory over Nadia Abdala/Jessica Leitch at the No. 3 spot.
The Bruins moved out to a 2-0 lead in the match when Ashley Joelson downed Clarke, 6-2, 6-2 at court No. 3. UCLA then moved within a point of clinching when Alex McGoodwin notched a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Rebecca Rankin at court No. 4.
Zalameda, ranked No. 24 nationally in singles, clinched the match for the Bruins at court No. 1, recording a 6-3, 6-1 win over 65th-ranked Sabrina Capannolo.
Other singles winners for UCLA on Saturday were Lumpkin (court #5) and Anna-Viktoria Lind (court #6). ASU's lone singles win came at court No. 2, where Nadia Abdala outlasted Schnack, 7-6(4), 4-6, (10-8).
UCLA is off next week for final exams. The Bruins will not be in action again until a March 30 showdown with Oregon in Eugene.
