
UCLA Splits on Second Day of UNLV Louisville Slugger Desert Classic

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Junior Amanda Kamekona homered and freshman GiOnna DiSalvatore drove in four runs, as the sixth-ranked Bruins beat Portland State 7-4 on Saturday at the UNLV Louisville Slugger Desert Classic. UCLA dropped its first game of the evening to Illinois 6-2.
The Bruins will conclude play at the tournament on Sunday against Wisconsin. Game time has been changed to 1 p.m.
Against Portland State (3-5), the Bruins scored in the first inning for the seventh time this season, with all of those games resulting in wins. Playing as the visiting team, junior Amanda Kamekona hit her second homer of the season to center field to put her squad up 1-0.
In the third, the Bruins (7-2) drew three straight, one-out walks from Kamekona, senior Krista Colburn and sophomore Megan Langenfeld. One out later, freshman GiOnna DiSalvatore singled to left to plate Kamekona and Colburn to make it 3-0.
UCLA added three more in the top of the fifth. Kamekona led off with a walk and stole second, while Colburn followed with a walk. After Kamekona stole third and Colburn reached second on a passed ball, Langenfeld singled to right to score Kamekona to make it 4-0. One out later, freshman pinch-runner Lauren Mirabal stole second and came around to score with Colburn ahead of her on a two-run single by DiSalvatore to put UCLA up 6-0.
In the seventh, the Bruins increased their lead to 7-0. DiSalvatore led off with a single and was doubled home by freshman Monica Harrison.
In the bottom of the inning, Portland State scored four unearned runs to make the final score 7-4.
DiSalvatore finished the game 3-for-4, while Kamekona scored three runs.
In the circle, senior Anjelica Selden improved to 3-1 on the year, striking out 12 and allowing four hits.
After three scoreless innings in Saturday's opener, Illinois (5-4), playing as the visiting team, broke through in the fourth. Shanna Diller was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and two batters later, came home on an RBI double by Hope Howell.
In the fifth, a Bruin error extended the inning and allowed the Fighting Illini to score three unearned runs. With one out and one on, Angelena Mexicano reached on an error. After freshman Donna Kerr retired Diller on a strikeout for the second out, Lana Armstrong singled in Danielle Zymkowitz to make it 2-0. Hollie Pinchback followed with a double to score Mexicano and Armstrong to put Illinois ahead 4-0.
Illinois added another in the sixth. Howell led off with an infield single, moved to second on a bunt and scored one out later on an RBI single by Sarah Bryers. The Fighting Illini made it 6-0 on back-to-back doubles by Diller and Armstrong in the seventh.
The Bruins (6-2) finally got on the board in the bottom of the seventh. Harrison led off with a single. After a groundout by freshman Katie Schroeder moved Harrison to second, she advanced to third following a single by senior Ashley Herrera. Colburn then walked to load the bases and Langenfeld drove in Harrison on an infield single to short to make it 6-1. On the play, Herrera suffered an ankle injury sliding into third base and was taken from the field in an ambulance to a local hospital.
UCLA added another run on a fielder's choice RBI groundout from freshman Samantha Camuso that scored freshman pinch-runner Amy Crawford, but could not complete the comeback.
The Bruins squandered numerous opportunites to get on the scoreboard in the early innings, leaving runners at third in the first and second and the bases loaded in the fourth. For the game, UCLA left 10 on base.
Herrera and Langenfeld each had two hits for the Bruins. Kerr tossed the first five innings, allowing four runs (one earned), six hits and one walk with five strikeouts. Langenfeld pitched the final two frames, giving up two runs and four hits with two strikeouts.
Howell had three hits for the Illini, while Armstrong, Bryers and Diller had two each. Claire DeVreese went the distance in the circle, allowing two runs, eight hits and one walk with seven strikeouts.
