
Morikawa & Vega Lead Bruin Cross Country At NCAA West Regional

Kent Morikawa and Sierra Vega led the UCLA cross country teams on Saturday in Springfield, OR at the NCAA West Regional as the men finished eighth and the women were 10th in the team competition.
Morikawa, a junior, was UCLA's No. 1 runner as he finished 23rd in a time of 30:37.95. It was the second time this season the junior had led the Bruins on a course and with today's finish, he earns All-West Region honors.
Senior Jake Matthews, running in his final West Region race, was the No. 2 finisher for the men as he finished 52nd in a time of 31:09.81. Sophomore Zack Torres was the No. 3 runner, placing 58th with a time of 31:14.61. Junior Spencer Knight was the No. 4 runner with a 65th-place finish (31:17.43). Freshmen Nohe Lema (78th, 31:29.29) and Pablo Rosales (81st, 31:31.09) rounded out the Bruin runners at the regional.
On the women's side, freshman Sierra Vega took her spot at the No. 1 runner for the first time this season as she finished 41st in a time of 21:06.32. Senior Shannon Murakami, who had been the No. 1 runner all season, was the second finisher for the women with a 50th-place run of 21:11.30. Fellow senior Kelcie Wiemann was the third runner, placing 54th in a time of 21:15.43. Freshmen Melissa Skiba was 57th in a time of 21:20.61, Paisley Pettway was 116th (22:10.29), Amber Murakami was 128th (22:19.67) and Elle Sanders was 168th (22:49.59) to round out the Bruin scorers. Today's women's performance was the highest team finish for the Bruins since 2006 when they finished fifth.
At-large selections for the NCAA Championships will be announced on Sunday, November 14th no later than 4:00 pm PST.
