Madison, Wisc. - The UCLA women's tennis team was one of two unseeded teams to earn a spot in the quarterfinals of the ITA National Team Indoors on Friday, as the Bruins knocked off No. 6 Miami, 4-3 in a round of 16 showdown at the University of Wisconsin's Nielsen Tennis Stadium. Next up for the Bruins (6-0) will be a meeting with third-seeded Cal on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. (CST).
Despite the close score, Friday's match was never really in doubt for the Bruins, who raced out to a 4-0 lead before Miami could get on the board. Doubles, however, was extremely close, with 10th-ranked Andrea Remynse and Yasmin Schnack pulling out a close 9-7 win over third-ranked Gabriela Mejia and Laura Vallverdu at court No. 1. With UCLA winning and court No. 3, and Miami taking a victory at court No. 2, Remynse and Schnack's win secured the point for the Bruins.
UCLA then posted three straight wins in singles play to take an insurmountable 4-0 lead. Pamela Montez (court No. 4), Maya Johansson (court No. 6) and Schnack (court No. 1) were the singles winners for the Bruins. Schnack's 7-5, 6-4 victory over Vallverdu was the match-clinching win for the Bruins.
Friday's UCLA win avenged a 4-2 loss to Miami at last year's NCAA Championships.
North Carolina, which upset No. 4 Georgia, 5-2 on Friday, is the other unseeded team to reach the quarterfinals.
