Bruins Tied for Sixth at NCAA East Regional

The top-seeded UCLA men's golf team was tied for sixth place following the opening day of competition at the NCAA East Regional at the Course at Yale Thursday.
The Bruins posted a team score of 282 (+2) and trailed first-round frontrunner Texas, which posted a team score of 274 (-6). Unranked Penn State and Kent State were tied for second place at three-under par 277, followed by East Tennessee State in fourth place at 278 (-2) and Alabama at one-over par 281. UCLA was tied with Virginia and Charlotte.
After 54 holes, the top five teams advance to the 113th NCAA Championship, June 1-6 in Tennessee.
Sophomore Alex Shi Yup Kim continued his remarkable play this season, carding a three-under par 67 in the opening round. Kim made four birdies and a bogey on the classic, 86 year-old course, designed by Charles Blair Macdonald.
Freshman Mario Clemens was tied for 27th after posting a 71 (+1) in a round that featured three birdies and four bogeys.
Three players -- sophomore Gregor Main and freshmen Pedro Figueiredo and Pontus Widegren -- each carded scores of 72 (+2) and were tied for 40th place. Each player made three birdies on the day.
Cody Gribble of Texas was the first round leader and firing a 64 (-6) on Thursday.
The second round continues on Friday and the Bruins will tee off at 8:20 a.m. EDT.
