In a role reversal of the two teams' previous match, the UCLA men's volleyball team built a 2-0 lead but could not hang on, losing at Long Beach State, 3-2.
The Bruins dropped to 6-2 (1-1) on the year and saw their five-game winning streak snapped by the 49ers. Game scores were 19-25, 22-25, 25-14, 25-20, 15-13.
UCLA jumped out to an early 13-7 lead in the first set and went on to take the first two sets before Long Beach State fought back to take the third and fourth sets. The 5th set went back and forth but the 49ers eventually prevailed after a service error by Gonzalo Quiroga and an attack error by Weston Dunlap ended the match.
Quiroga did have his best game as a Bruin though, as he led the team with 20 kills and added 6 digs in the loss. Junior quick hitter Weston Dunlap also provided a solid performance, as he recorded 14 kills, 2 block assists and 1 ace.
Thomas Amberg led the team in blocks with 3 solos and 5 assists while Jack Polales contributed 7 kills. Setter Alex Scattareggia had 46 assists on the night while Tom Hastings led the team in digs with 11.
In the final three sets, Long Beach State hit .571, .448 and .375 respectively, while also capitalizing on 16 combined errors by the Bruins in those sets. In addition, the 49ers served 8 aces in the match as compared to just 3 by UCLA. Jim Baughman led Long Beach State with 15 kills.
UCLA's next match will be Wednesday, January 26th against the Pepperdine Waves at 7:00 p.m in Pauley Pavilion. Last year the Waves defeated the Bruins in both matches 3-0 and 3-2.
