Charlottesville, Va. - The seventh-ranked UCLA women's tennis team was upset in the opening day of play at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships on Friday, suffering a 4-3 loss to No. 12 Clemson at the Boar's Head Sports Club.
After winning the doubles point with wins at court Nos. 2 and 3, the Bruins were unable to hold on in singles, dropping four of six matches.
Despite straight-set singles wins from Maya Johansson (court No. 6) and Andrea Remynse (court No. 2), which gave UCLA a 3-2 lead in Friday's match, the Bruins suffered the upset after losing the final two matches in third sets. With the dual match tied at 3-3, Clemson's 14th-ranked Josipa Bek rallied for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over 96th-ranked McCall Jones at court No. 1 to give the Tigers the win.
UCLA (6-3) now moves to the consolation draw in Virginia and will take on Miami on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. (EST).
