There were no freshman nerves for Alec Faldermeyer in his first head-to-head matchup with crosstown rival USC as the Bruin newcomer unleashed a monster lifetime-best throw of 218-5 to finish second in the first scoring event of the annual dual meet.
Faldermeyer came into the meet with a top mark of 207-4 and surpassed that mark by over 10 feet on his final throw of competition with a mark of 218-5. Despite his huge performance, USC's Trey Henderson held on to win by just inches with a mark of 218-7, which he threw on his third attempt.
Today's performance moves him to No. 3 all-time in school history behind only Boldizsar Kocsor and David Wilson. He is just inches shy of the freshman school record of 219-1, set by Kocsor. His mark moves him to 11th in the NCAA this season.
Faldermeyer wasn't the only won to throw a lifetime-best on Saturday as junior Thomas Nagengast also posted a personal-best. His throw of 166-2 bettered his previous best of 158-11.
USC heads into tomorrow's full meet with a 6-3 lead. Events begin at 11:00 am.
