Cory Primm and Alec Faldermeyer became the second and third Bruin men to earn a spot at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships after posting qualifying performances on day two of the preliminary round in Eugene. OR. They join freshman Mike Woepse, who qualified yesterday in the pole vault.
Primm, who ran the No. 5 800m mark in the world last weekend (1:44.71), secured his place in the final NCAA Championship of his career as he was an automatic qualifier out of heat two during the quarterfinal rounds. His time of 1:46.36 was 3rd overall during the three quarterfinal heats and second-best in heat two. Faldermeyer punched his ticket with a sixth-place finish in the hammer on Friday as he posted a mark of 212-6. The freshman is already an All-American this season after earning indoor honors this past March in the weight throw.
Sophomore Maxwell Dyce was second in heat one of the 200m to automatically advance to Saturday's quarterfinal round. His time of 21.71 was 10th overall. Sophomore Randall Carroll, who has been hampered by an ankle injury he sustained during football drills last week, finished seventh in heat seven of the 200m (23.09). He was 47th overall.
In the steeplechase, senior Jake Matthews finished 16th overall and fifth in heat three (8:57.55), while sophomore David McDonald finished 14th in heat two and 41st overall, running 9:22.01.
In the high jump, junior Taylor Hobson did not clear the opening height of 6-7 and does not advance to Nationals.
Competition concludes on Saturday with the triple jump (Clark/Stucky, 12:30 pm), 4x100m relay (1:15 pm), 200m (Dyce, 2:50 pm) and the discus (Taylor/Kosecki/Nagengast, 3:30 pm).
