San Diego, Calif. - Bruin sophomore Robin Anderson lived up to her top billing at the 2012 USTA/ITA Southwest Regionals on Monday, posting a straight-set victory in the singles final at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.
Anderson, who dropped just one set in six matches during the tournament, notched a 6-2, 6-4 win over USC's second-seeded Sabrina Santamaria in the title match. She becomes UCLA's first ITA Regional singles champion since Riza Zalameda in 2004.
"Robin hasn't played a lot of tennis since NCAAs in May so needless to say this is a huge accomplishment for her," said UCLA head coach Stella Sampras Webster. "I think it was a smart decision for her not to play the All-Americans a few weeks ago because she really wasn't 100 percent. But she was physically ready to play this week and although she didn't play her best, I think she competed as well as I've seen her since she's been at UCLA."
With the victory, Anderson qualifies for a spot in next month's USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing, N.Y. The tournament takes place from Nov. 8-11 at the USTA's Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, site of the U.S. Open.
