
No. 1 UCLA Advances to SoCal Semis with 17-5 Win Over No. 8 UCSD

LOS ANGELES -- The No. 1 UCLA men's water polo team improved to 18-0 on the year with a 17-5 win over No. 8 UC San Diego on Saturday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Center. The Bruins improve to 54-1 all-time against the Tritons, which dropped to 7-7 on the year. For UCLA, the 18 consecutive wins ties for the fifth-best streak in school history (also opened the 2013 season 18-0).
Sophomore Gordon Marshall had a game-high three goals to lead the Bruins.
The Bruins jumped out to a 6-2 lead at the end of the first period. Junior Anthony Daboub opened the scoring with back-to-back goals (6:40, 6:22) to give the Bruins a 2-0 edge. Then Marshall added a goal from set (6:01) to make it 3-0. After a power play score from the Tritons, junior Danny McClintick answered with a power play score of his own (4:12) to make it 4-1. UCSD's Lukas Syka scored a goal from the front court (3:52) to trim the lead to 4-2. But UCLA closed the period with goals from sophomore Ryder Roberts (2:34) and senior Cristiano Mirarchi (1:49).
UCLA put four more up on the board in the second while surrendering a goal to UCSD. The Tritons' Josh Stiling capitalized on an extra man opportunity to cut the Bruins' lead to 6-3 (6:07). But the Bruins ended the period with the last four goals, including scores from Marshall (5:42), senior Daniel Lenhart (3:54), Mirarchi (3:26) and a power play goal from McClintick (0:20) to give UCLA a 10-3 lead by halftime.
The Bruins bettered UCSD by a count of 4-1 in the third period. UCLA scored the first three goals to open the third. Roberts added his second of the game (7:50), then Marshall completed his hat trick (7:09) and redshirt freshman Matt Farmer scored from two meters (5:33) to push the lead to 13-3. After a UCSD goal, sophomore Jack Fellner scored his first of the day (1:57) to end the scoring in the third with the Bruins leading 14-4.
UCLA won the fourth period 3-1. Fellner added his second (7:42) and then senior David Culpan (2:04) and redshirt freshman Maxwell Irving (1:15) each added their first scores of the game to provide the 17-5 final.
The Bruins were 4-for-6 on power plays while the Tritons were 3-for-7. Neither team attempted a penalty shot.
Sophomore Garrett Danner started in goal for the Bruins and was relieved by Senior Stephen White in the third period. Danner allowed three goals while making seven saves. White surrendered two goals while registering two saves. Cameron Ravanbach played the entire game for UC San Diego allowing all 17 goals while making seven stops.
The Bruins will have an opportunity to score more points in the SoCal BMW Crosstown Cup, formerly known as The Gauntlet, tomorrow when they face No. 4 USC in the semifinals of the SoCal Tournament at Spieker Aquatics Center at 10:50 a.m.
