No. 3 UCLA Stuns No. 1 Stanford Again, 7-6

October 24, 2014 | Men's Water Polo

LOS ANGELES -- The No. 3 UCLA men's water polo team (20-2, 4-0 MPSF) posted its second win over a No. 1 team this season (both times against Stanford), with a 7-6 win over the top-ranked Cardinal (17-3, 3-1) on Friday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Center on the Pac-12 Networks. Stanford and UCLA have met three times this year with the Bruins winning two of the contests. In all three meetings, the top-ranked team has lost.

Sophomore Gordon Marshall tied for a game-high two goals while sophomore Garrett Danner had a game-high eight saves.

Stanford's BJ Churnside struck first for the Cardinal at the 7:00 mark of the first period. Junior Anthony Daboub tied the game at 1-1 with a power play score (4:22) off a nice feed from sophomore Ryder Roberts to end the first period tied at 1-1.

UCLA jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the second period. Junior Danny McClintick made it 2-1 with a skip shot that found the back of the net (7:35). Sophomore Gordon Marshall then put the Bruins up 3-1 with a nice redirect from senior Cristiano Mirarchi (6:07). After Stanford trimmed it to 3-2 on a goal by Adam Abdulhamid (4:17), UCLA got a goal from Roberts on a power play with an assist from McClintick. Sam Pfeil then cut the lead to 4-3 with an exclusion goal (1:38) to end the first half scoring.

Stanford's Jackson Kimbell knotted the game at 4-4 in the third period (4:52) with an exlusion goal. But UCLA's sophomore Jack Fellner put the Bruins back in front (3:45) with a power play goal of his own. Marshall then scored his second of the game (0:34) to give the Bruins a 6-4 lead heading into the fourth.

Senior Paul Reynolds then made his presence felt with a drive and finish off a feed from sophomore Chancellor Ramirez to put UCLA up 7-4 (7:41) in the fourth. From then on, it was clock-killing time. Stanford got a goal from Bret Bonanni (2:58) to trim the lead to 7-5. Then things got interesting when Kimbell scored his second of the game on another power play to make it 7-6 with 0:58 to go. But after Stanford made a stop on defense, the Bruins had to do the same in the final 0:28 and got a field block by Roberts on Churnside's last-second shot.

Danner started in goal for the Bruins and played the entire game, making eight saves. Drew Holland played the entire game for Stanford and was credited with five stops.

The Bruins return to action this Saturday (Oct. 26) when they continue MPSF play at No. 7 UC Santa Barbara at Noon.
