No. 3 UCLA Opens 2014 with 26-1 Win Over Redlands

LA JOLLA, Calif. -- The No. 3 UCLA men's water polo team opened the season with a 26-1 win over Redlands this morning at the Triton Invitational on the campus of UC San Diego. Junior Danny McClintick led the Bruins with a career-high six goals. Sophomore Jack Fellner also posted a career-best five goals against the Bulldogs.

UCLA dominated from the start, jumping out to a 9-0 lead before Redlands scored its only goal of the game. The Bruins scored the last 17 goals of the game for the 26-1 final.

The Bruins led 8-0 after the first period and received goals from senior Paul Reynolds (7:17, 6:34 and 6:00), senior Cristiano Mirarchi (3:21), redshirt freshman Maxwell Irving (2:39), McClintick (2:01 and 1:20) and senior Christopher Meinhold (0:16).

The Bruins surrendered their lone goal in the second period, but put another five on the board to lead 13-1 at halftime. McClintick scored his third of the game (6:27) and then Mirarchi scored his second (4:40). Senior Chris Fahlsing added two goals in the second (3:50 and 0:03) while redshirt junior David Culpan added a score at the 1:13 mark.

The Bruins posted another 8-0 shutout in the third period to lead 21-1 heading into the fourth. Six different players scored, highlight by three more strikes from McClintick (2:59, 1:28 and 0:38). Senior Daniel Lenhart opened the scoring with 6:50 left in the third, followed by a hat trick from Mirarchi (6:21). Fellner scored his first of the game at 4:46 followed by redshirt freshman Jack Grover scoring his first at the 4:20 mark. Irving scored his second of the game with 2:06 remaining in the period.

The fourth quarter was won 5-0 by UCLA and it was the Fellner show. The sophomore scored four of the Bruins five goals in the fourth (7:45, 5:58, 2:25 and 1:35) while freshman Alex Roelse scored his first collegiate goal with 4:21 to go in the game.

The Bruins were 3-for-4 on power plays while the Bulldogs were 0-for-3 while neither team attempted a penalty shot.

Senior Stephen White started in goal and played the first half, registering two saves and allowed one goal. Senior James Hartshorne played the second half in goal and pitched a shutout while being credited with five saves.
