IRVINE, Calif., -- The top-ranked UCLA Bruins improved to 21-0 on the year and 5-0 in the MPSF with a 15-8 win at No. 7 UC Irvine (11-7, 1-3) on Sunday afternoon at Anteater Aquatics Complex. The win marked the Bruins' 24th-straight victory, dating back to last year, which is tied for the second-longest winning streak in school history (1968-70). The all-time record is 50, which was established from 1964-68.
The Bruins improved to 75-59-1 all-time against UC Irvine, having won the last 14 meetings (since 2007). Wright is 12-0 against the Anteaters.
UCLA was led by sophomore Max Irving who tied his career high of four goals for the third time this season. Junior Garrett Danner registered 14 saves in the cage for the Bruins.
UCLA scored the first four goals of the match and were never threatened in the match. Irving scored his first goal from the front court (7:35) and junior Gordon Marshall added a goal at set (6:38) to put UCLA off and running. Junior Ryder Roberts followed with back-to-back goals (5:13, 4:16). After a counter attack score by Pablo Carballo (3:34), senior Daniel McClintick scored from the front court to push the lead to 5-1 (3:13). Junior Patrick Fellner scored his first goal on a power play (2:33) and Irving added his second from the front court (1:50) to push the lead to 7-1. Chris Swieca scored from two meters for UCI to end the first period with the Bruins leading 7-2 (0:16).
Fellner opened the scoring in the second period with his second exclusion goal (6:26) to push the lead to 8-2. Carballo scored his second of the match from the front court (4:51) to cut the lead to 8-3. But the Bruins tacked on two more goals to lead 10-3 at the break. Senior Anthony Daboub got his first goal from the front court (3:19) and Fellner completed his hat trick on another 6-on-5 opportunity (1:18).
Daboub opened the third period with two straight goals (7:02, 3:02) to extend the lead to 12-3. Irvine's Matt Skinner scored from the front court (2:07) to end the third with the Bruins leading 12-4.
UC Irvine got back-to-back goals from Jared Osborn (6:36, 5:33) to cut the deficit to 12-6. But Irving completed his hat trick (4:53) and sophomore Jack Grover added a counter score (3:31) to make it 14-6. After Osborn completed a hat trick for UC Irvine (1:46), Irving registered his fourth (1:29) to push the lead to 15-7. Lovre Milos scored the final goal of the match (1:19) to provide the 15-8 final.
Danner played all of the first three periods and the first five minutes of the fourth, tallying four steals and two assists to go with his 14 stops, while allowing six goals. One of his saves was on a penalty shot by Carballo in the third period. Freshman Alex Wolf played the final three minutes of the fourth, registering two saves while allowing two scores. Byron Rivers played the entire match in goal for the Anteaters, surrendering 15 goals while making 10 stops.
UCLA went 3-for-7 on power plays while the Anteaters went 1-for-4. UC Irvine went 0-for-1 on penalty shots while UCLA didn't attempt one.
The Bruins return to action on Sunday, Nov. 1 at 1:00 p.m. when they host the only other undefeated team in MPSF action, No. 4 Pacific (19-2, 5-0).
