
Cross Country Battles Tough Elements

SEATTLE – In a drenched Jefferson Park Golf Course the UCLA men finished seventh overall while the women placed 10th, Friday at the NCAA West Region Championships.
Leading the way for the men was Sergey Sushchikh, placing ninth with a time of 31:18.9 on the soggy 10k course. Lane Werley followed in 16th with a time of 31:27.4.
Myles Smith was 40th overall with a time of 31:57.5 and Jonah Diaz was close by in 44th at 31:59.2. Sean Davis was 54th in a time of 32:10.4 while Austin O'Neil (75, 32:34.0) and Jackson Marshall (76, 32:36.0) finished back-to-back.
Freshman Carolina Johnson once again paced the women with an 11th place finish. The newcomer navigated the 6k course in a time of 21:00.4. Fellow freshman Julia Rizk was 71st with a time of 21:55.3 while Aliya Shirif closely followed in 73rd with a time of 21:58.3.
Emily Scharmann was 88th with a time of 22:15.7 and Ashlee Powers rounded out the UCLA top-5 in 95th place with a time of 22:17.9. Roni Yamane (163, 23:08.3) and Taylor Taite (166, 23:10.0) closed out the competition for the Bruins.
