LOS ANGELES - The 13th-ranked Bruins outscored their competition 21-1 on Friday on the first day of the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament at Easton Stadium, defeating Providence 7-1 before blanking Illinois 14-0 in five innings, as senior Ally Carda tossed her second no-hitter of the season in the nightcap.
In game one, the Bruins (18-5) had 11 hits, as Carda and seniors Gracie Goulder and Stephany LaRosa and sophomore Delaney Spaulding all recorded two-hit contests, with Spaulding driving in four.
In the circle, freshman Selina Ta'amilo (2-1) struck out five in the first complete game of her career, scattering six hits, one run and two walks. She retired the last eight batters of the contest, posting 1-2-3 innings in the fourth, sixth and seventh, while striking out a pair in the sixth.
UCLA got on the board in its first at-bat, as Carda led off with a single to right-center, moved to second when Spaulding reached on an error on a sacrifice attempt and scored on a single up the middle by freshman Kylee Perez.
Providence (0-6) evened things up in the second. Nadia Kemp led off with a single up the middle and moved to second on a bunt hit by Danielle Deraney, as both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Two outs later, Kiki Baldassari singled to left to plate Kemp to even the game, but sophomore Gabrielle Maurice kept things equal when she threw out Deraney at home.
UCLA netted three in the second on one swing of the bat. With one out, Goulder walked and junior Allexis Bennett reached on a bunt single. One out later, Spaulding hit her second homer of the season and in as many games to left to put the Bruins up 4-1.
In the fourth, the Bruins tacked on two more. Carda drew a leadoff walk and scored on a double to left-center off the bat of Spaulding to make it 5-1. After Perez reached on a fielding error by Deraney at first, with Spaulding taking third, LaRosa followed with a single to left to bring in Spaulding with the Bruins' sixth run.
UCLA added one more in the fifth. With one out, Goulder bunted for a hit, stole second, and one out later, scored on a single to left by Carda to make it 7-1.
In game two, Carda (9-3) pitched the third no-hitter of her career, striking out nine in five innings and giving up three walks. She had 1-2-3 innings in the second, fourth and fifth, setting down the last seven. Carda struck out a pair in every inning but the second, when she settled for one.
The 107th no-hitter in UCLA history, the last three coming from Carda, the senior becomes the 14th Bruin to throw at least three career no-nos and the first since Jessica Hall (2013) to throw a pair in one season. Carda's first no-hitter of the year came on Feb. 15 against Boise State.
Carda was backed by a 13-hit attack on offense, as Maurice went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI, Spaulding was 2-for-2 with three RBI and LaRosa and Perez each had two hits and two RBI. Eight of the nine starters had at least one hit.
The Bruins sent 13 batters to the plate in the first inning, scoring nine times on seven hits. Carda led off with a walk and moved to second on a Spaulding sacrifice. After a walk to Perez, LaRosa bounced one through the right side to score Carda with the game's first run, as Perez took third and LaRosa second on the throw. Maurice followed with a single through the same spot on the right side to score Perez and LaRosa to make it 3-0. Freshman Maddy Jelenicki then launched a two-run homer to left-center, her second of the season, to put the Bruins up 5-0.
After junior Mysha Sataraka reached on an error by Illinois (8-12) third baseman Danielle Trezzo, she moved to second on a Goulder sacrifice and to third on a wild pitch. An infield single by Bennett to the left side plated Sataraka with the Bruins' sixth run, while Carda doubled her to third to put a pair on. Spaulding connected on her second homer of the doubleheader and third in as many games, again to left, to increase the advantage to 9-0.
In the second, the Bruins added an unearned run. Maurice led off with a single to center, moved to second on a passed ball and scored when Allie Bauch misplayed a Jelenicki grounder at second to make it 10-0.
UCLA posted another run in the third. Spaulding walked to open the inning, moved to second on a Perez grounder and scored on a LaRosa single up the middle to extend the advantage to 11-0.
The Bruins scored three more in the fourth. With two outs and Bennett at first, Spaulding blooped a single into left, with Bennett taking third. The throw in by Jill Nicklas in left went all the way to the backstop and Bennett alertly scampered home with the Bruins' 12th run. Perez then belted her first collegiate home run to right to put UCLA on top 14-0.
The Bruins have another doubleheader on Saturday, facing Illinois again at 2:30 p.m. and UC Davis at 5 p.m. Live stats will be available at UCLABruins.com.
