Seventh-Seeded Bruins Dispatch of Northwestern, 4-0 in NCAA 2nd Round

May 10, 2015 | Women's Tennis

LOS ANGELES - The seventh-seeded UCLA women's tennis team earned a trip to Waco, Texas for next week's NCAA Round of 16 on Sunday, as the Bruins dispatched of Northwestern, 4-0 in an NCAA Second Round encounter at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins (20-4) will take on 10th-seeded Texas A&M (17-5) on Friday at 9:00 a.m. (CST). The Aggies downed TCU, 4-0 on Sunday.

NCAA Tournament Draw

Sunday's doubles point essentially came down to court No. 2, as both court Nos. 1 and 3 were extremely lopsided. UCLA's ninth-ranked Robin Anderson and Jennifer Brady dominated at the top spot, losing just one game en route to an 8-1 win over 48th-ranked Alicia Barnett and Erin Larner. Northwestern (16-8) was equally as effective at court No. 3, where Alex Chatt and Lok Sze Leung posted an 8-1 win of their own. With the point on the line, UCLA's third-ranked Catherine Harrison and Kyle McPhillips were just too strong at court No. 2, downing Rheeya Doshi and Brooke Rischbieth, 8-4.

Already with a 1-0 lead, the Bruins kept the momentum going into singles, moving out to multiple-break leads on the top four courts. Anderson and Harrison were the fastest out of the gates, as both players easily won first sets and enjoyed comfortable second-set leads. They would also be the first two to finish, with Anderson downing Barnett, 6-1, 6-2 at court No. 1, and Harrison beating Chatt, 6-1, 6-1 at court No. 4.

Anderson, the No. 1 player in America, now has 121 career singles victories, moving her into sole possession of second place all-time at UCLA behind only Keri Phebus (144). Anderson entered the day tied with Annica Cooper with 120 career wins.

With UCLA now leading 3-0, Chanelle Van Nguyen would get the clinching victory at court No. 2, where she downed Larner, 6-3, 6-3.

UCLA, which has now reached the 20-win mark for the sixth-straight season, last met Texas A&M in the semifinals of the 2013 NCAA Championships in Illinois, with the Aggies just edging out the Bruins, 4-3.
