LOS ANGELES, Calif., -- The top-ranked UCLA Bruins improved to 3-0 on the year with an 18-6 win over No. 9 UC San Diego (3-3) at the UCLA Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Center in the Bruins' home opener.

Junior Gordon Marshall had a game-high and career-high-tying five goals on five shots, playing in just three periods. UCLA had another balanced scoring attack with 11 different Bruins tallying at least one goal.

Junior Ryder Roberts scored the first goal of the match on a power play at the 7:30 mark of the first period. Marshall then put UCLA up 3-0 with back-to-back goals at two meters (6:32) and on a counter (5:31). After Nick Alexander got UCSD on the board with a power play strike (4:25), the Bruins ended the period with four more scores. Redshirt freshman Austin Rone scored from the front court (3:19) and another redshirt freshman, Warren Snyder, scored on a counter attack (1:59). Junior Patrick Fellner scored from the front court (1:17) to make it 6-1 and Marshall completed a hat trick with another counter goal (0:41) to extend the Bruins' lead to 7-1 at the end of one.

Junior Patrick Woepse opened the scoring in the second with a goal at set (5:27). Chase Cockerill completed a nice drive with a strong finish to cut the lead to 8-2 (5:13). But Marshall answered with his fourth of the match with a goal from two meters (4:50). UCSD's Cole Martinez scored on a 6-on-5 opportunity (3:42) to trim the lead to 9-3. But Marshall could not be stopped on this day, scoring his fifth goal at set at the 3:33 mark and sophomore Jack Grover added a counter score (0:45) to end the half with UCLA leading 11-3.

Cockerill opened the scoring in the third with a power play goal (6:13) to cut the lead to 11-4. But UCLA responded with a power goal from sophomore Max Irving (5:48) and a counter score from sophomore James Robinson (5:08) to extend the lead to 13-4. After another power play goal by UCSD (4:53), the Bruins pushed the lead to double digits with counter attack goals from Robinson (4:02) and redshirt freshman Kent Inoue (3:28). Another power play goal by the Tritons (2:45) was answered with a front court score by junior Joey Fuentes (0:52) off a nice no-look feed from redshirt freshman David Stiling to end the third with UCLA holding a 16-6 advantage.

The Bruins blanked the Tritons in the fourth and added a pair of goals in the frame. Woepse added his second from set (4:05) and freshman Spencer Farrar found the back of the cage on a Bruin power play (2:39) to provide the 18-6 final as UCLA improved to 56-1 all-time against UC San Diego.

Junior Garrett Danner started in goal for UCLA and played the first two and a half periods, allowing five goals (four on power plays) while making two saves and tallying two assists and one steal. Freshman Alex Wolf played the second half of the third period and the first half of the fourth, registering three stops while allowing one goal and tallying one assist. Sophomore Aleksandar Ruzic saw the first action of his career, playing the final 4:59 while recording one save and one steal without surrendering a goal.

UCLA went 3-for-5 on power plays while UCSD went 5-for-7. The Bruins were 0-for-2 on penalty shots while UCSD did not attempt one.
