
No. 1 UCLA Beats No. 13 UC Davis 14-4

LA JOLLA, Calif., -- The top-ranked UCLA Bruins opened the 2015 season with a 14-4 win over No. 13 UC Davis at the Triton Invitational on Saturday morning at Canyonview Aquatic Center.
Junior Patrick Fellner led the Bruins with a game-high four goals.
Junior Ryder Roberts scored the first goal of the season on a counter attack at the 7:12 mark of the first period. Junior Gordon Marshall put the Bruins up 2-0 with a goal from two meters (6:19). Sophomore Matt Farmer made it 3-0 (4:08) with a counter attack strike. The Aggies got a power play goal from Ido Goldschmidt to trim the lead to 3-1 (3:21). But the Bruins responded with goals from sophomore Alex Roelse (2:58) and junior Joey Fuentes (2:13) to end the scoring in the first period with UCLA holding a 5-1 advantage.
In the second quarter, UCLA scored the first five goals to take a commanding 10-1 lead. Fellner had back-to-back goals (7:18, 6:35) to open the period. Then senior Daniel McClintick scored back-to-back counter attack goals (6:12, 5:03) to put UCLA up 9-1. Sophomore Max Irving scored UCLA's seventh straight goal on a 6-on-5 opportunity to make it 10-1 (3:04). Riley Venne ended the Aggies' scoring drought with a goal from the front court (1:59) to end the scoring in the second with UCLA holding a 10-2 lead at the break.
Fellner would again score back-to-back goals in a low-scoring third period with a power play score (2:48) and a goal from the front court (2:11) to extend the lead to 12-2. Sasa Antunovic's goal in the final seconds ended a third-period drought for UC Davis as the Bruins took a 12-3 lead into the fourth.
The Bruins also won the fourth period by a 2-1 score to provide the 14-4 final. Fuentes scored his second of the game, a power play strike, to open the scoring in the final stanza with 6:11 remaining. Antunovic made it 13-4 with a goal from five meters (4:08). Sophomore James Robinson ended the scoring on a penalty shot with 4:08 to go.
Junior Garrett Danner started in goal for UCLA and played the first two periods, allowing two goals while making five saves and tallying five assists and four steals. Freshman Alex Wolf played the second half in the cage, registering seven stops while allowing two goals.
UCLA went 3-for-6 on power plays and 1-for-1 on penalty shots while UC Davis went 1-for-8 on power plays and did not attempt a penalty shot.
