
Another Sweep for #25 UCLA

HONOLULU, Hawai'i - Junior Jordan Anderson recorded 16 kills, junior Taylor Formico added 13 digs and freshman Zana Muno posted her second double-double in a row with 36 assists and 10 digs, as the 25th-ranked Bruins swept Iowa on Saturday at the Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Wahine Classic. Set scores were 25-20, 25-16, 25-13.
The Bruins improve to 3-1 on the season, while the Hawkeyes fall to 2-3.
UCLA hit .305 for the match, its 57th-straight victory when eclipsing the .300 mark, as Anderson tallied a .484 percentage with only one error in 31 attempts. Sophomore Reily Buechler had nine kills and seven digs, junior Claire Felix added eight kills and junior Jennie Frager posted six kills, four digs and four blocks. Senior Rachel Inouye recorded eight digs.
The first set featured six ties and a pair of lead changes, but the Bruins pulled away late to take the opener. After scoring the first three points on an Iowa attack error and kills from Anderson and Frager, the Bruins saw the Hawkeyes come back with four straight. With Iowa up 6-5, a combo block by Frager and redshirt junior Haley Lawless block and a Frager ace put the Bruins up 7-6 and they didn't trail for the rest of the set.
Equal at nine, runs of 4-0 and 8-2 for UCLA put the lead at a set-best six at 17-11. Kills by Buechler, Felix and Anderson, as well as a Buechler ace, made it 13-9. The next four Bruin points came on Anderson and Lawless kills and two Iowa errors to make the edge a half dozen. The Hawkeyes got to within three, but could get no further. A Felix kill closed out the 25-20 victory. Anderson and Felix each had four kills in the first, Formico added eight digs and the Bruins, who posted four aces, out-hit the Hawkeyes .103 to .051.
The Bruins never trailed in set two, scoring the first three points on back-to-back Anderson kills and a Buechler kill. At 10-9, the Bruins netted four straight on two consecutive Iowa errors, a combo block by Frager and Lawless and a kill by Anderson to go up 14-9.
With the score 16-12, the Bruins went on a 6-1 run to break it open. Kills by Buechler and Muno and an Iowa attack error made it 19-12, and after a sideout, Felix and Anderson kills and another Hawkeye error put the Bruins up 22-13. Leading 23-16, the Bruins scored the last two points of the second on an Anderson kill and a Muno ace to win it 25-16. Anderson posted seven kills to pace UCLA, while Buechler added five, as the Bruins out-hit the Hawkeyes .469 to .219.
UCLA trailed just twice in set three at 1-0 and 2-1, and then scored three straight on an Anderson/Frager block, a Frager kill and an Iowa attack error to go ahead 4-2. The Bruins led for the rest of the set. At 6-5, the Bruins scored three straight and eight of nine to bust it open. The run started with a service error, which was followed by Anderson and Felix kills to make it 9-5. After a sideout, two Anderson kills and a solo block, a Frager solo stuff and a Formico ace put the Bruins up 14-6.
At 17-10, the Bruins scored five straight to get their lead to double figures on a Buechler kill, two Iowa attack errors, an Inouye ace and a Felix/Muno combo block to make it 22-10. Leading 23-13, a Felix kill and an Anderson solo block wrapped up the 25-13 victory. Anderson led the Bruins with five kills to go with three blocks, while Buechler added three kills. Inouye notched six digs, as the Bruins out-hit the Hawkeyes .417 to -.062.
